"Cut Paper Art"

Mixed Media Paintings by Mary Ellen Palmeri

African forest elephants are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-elephant conflict. These great creatures plya a vital role for the preservation of forests of west and central Africa. They are essential for the germination of many rain forest trees.

The octopus and squid are actual creatures found the the Red Sea. My version of this sea is a fantasy representation, since the Red Sea is normally an intense turquoise color. Its name may have come from seasonal red-colored algae, whcih sometimes give waters a red tinge.

One day, looking for ways to express my feelings without realistic figures, I began to cut and paint abstract paper forms. I was feeling positive and energetic while doing this, and love how the finished piece reflects this.
